Tutorial

I had a quick tutorial today to discuss my ideas for this essay, I had a few notes:

I have to make sure I use the topic of anthropomorphism has on Narrative, narrative being (a spoken or written account of connected events; a story) I need to see how the human bahviour in animals or objects help the story along. How would they help the creative structure?
  • I like the idea of analysing Wallace and Gromit, the way they're dressed. The way they're culturally british. It's easier the create a story with more than one character - this could be the reasoning behind there needing to be a gromit there who seems to COMPLETE wallace.
  • Keep him on the right tracks.
  • I can look at the rest of aardman, they seem to use anthropomorphism in their work the keep the narrative going.
  • I will explore them further.

Anthropomorphism

The definition of Anthropomorphism is the attribution of human characteristics or behaviour to:

  • Animals
  • Objects

Zootopia is a perfect example of anthropomorphism, it's an entire city of animals with no humans. But each animal wears clothes and has human jobs. However each of their lives/jobs are changed by what animal they are, how their natural instincts help and hinder their life. What animals they are could effect the job roles they have.

Metamorphosis

1). Metamorphosis –

  • Where the characteristics of certain materials/techniques impact wholly, or on part of the narrative in specific animated film
  • The materials/technique is present/exposed
  • The qualities of the material are exploited •The nature of the materials is explored

2). Metamorphosis –

  • Where the physical transformation of a character is explored in an animated film
  • Fairytales
  • Mythology
  • Creation myths
  • Folk tales The use of Metamorphosis in animation to tell either part of, or the whole of, a story

Morph is Metamorphosis personified, he can transform into anything he wanted (provided it can be made with clay) - he explores many ways in which he can morph his body.

Task

TASK –

For our blog Using the ‘Story Arc’ and/or Vonnegut’s ‘Shape of the Story’ analyse no less than 2 short (10-20 mins) animated films, OR 1 long film (over 1 hr).

Note: the more you analyse the more value you will get from this exercise. Make notes about each of the following sections within the films

  • Exposition
  • Trigger
  • Rising action
  • Climax
  • Falling action
  • Resolution/ revelation (Dénouement)

Make notes of the timing for the ‘trigger’ and ‘climax’ points, how does this break the film up into sections? Extension: Draw conclusions between the structure of a film and the audience.

People talk about how a story takes shape, but where does the narrative begin and when does it become a story? There are two theories that help to explain this.

Introduction to Research Project

This project explores how animated media embodies the narrative form, the project also considers fictional narrative form. Exploring narratology I will gain understanding of theories and practices that influence narrative structure and storytelling. Further focus on narrative discourse considers how practitioners utilize a set of representational, organizational, and discursive cues to deliver story information to an audience. The unit also introduces recent developments and trends in traditional narrative storytelling.
In summary I will need to research narrative in the animated context and develop a 1500 word text.

I MUST PRODUCE:

  • A RESEARCH BLOG which must contain audio/visual assets and utilize the medium’s interactivity by adding links to relevant resources.
  • A 1500 TEXT based on your research findings contained within my blog. This content will be presented in PDF form for submission.
